SAND AND CEMENT
Some types of sub-structure require a sand and cement screed to receive the asphalt. This should consist of 1 part cement to 4 parts clean coarse sand by volume and be finished with a wooden float to a smooth surface. It should be laid in bays not exceeding 9m2 in area, to reduce the incidence of cracking due to drying shrinkage. The screed should be adequately cured before application of the asphalt.
Several proprietary screeds are available and all must be laid strictly in accordance with the manufacturers’ instruction.
Cementitous screeds are recommended in order to provide a stable base to receive mastic asphalt.
